Your Guide for Caring for Braces This Summer (While You’re Away)

Reviewed by Dr. Brian Patterson, DDS, Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

Summer is for camp and family trips, not worrying about braces. Whether your child is heading to camp with braces for the first time or you are taking a trip, here is a simple guide so you can relax and enjoy the season. (We will miss you, though!)

Pack a Mouthguard

For physical activities, from softball to kayaking, a mouthguard protects your teeth and braces. For contact sports, it is a must. In a pinch, you can grab one at any sporting goods store.

Watch Snacks and Treats

We hate to be buzzkills, but skip hard and sticky treats while you are away to avoid breaking a bracket or wire. Soft snacks are fine, just remember to brush. (For the full list, see our braces care guide.)

Build a Dental Care Kit

Pack the essentials plus a few braces extras: toothpaste, floss, and toothbrush, plus orthodontic wax, a pain reliever, a small mirror, sterile nail clippers or wire cutters, tweezers, and our contact info.

Handle Common Issues

  • Loose or broken bracket: cover a front bracket with wax to hold it and reduce irritation. For a back bracket, gently slide it off (wash hands first) and snip any extra wire with sterilized clippers, then cover with wax.
  • Cheek irritation: use wax, or sugarless gum in a pinch, and treat sores with an oral antiseptic.
  • Poking or broken wire: bend it back gently with a pencil eraser and cover with wax; if a front wire breaks, snip it back to the bracket with sterilized clippers.
  • Loose or lost elastic tie: reposition it with tweezers, or just book a quick visit when you are back. Not a big deal.

When you return, schedule a visit and we will fix anything that came up.

And Wear Sunblock

It has nothing to do with your teeth, but protect your skin too. Wear sunblock and reapply often, then enjoy your summer!
